Socotra measures 130 by 40 kms and consists of the main island, the islands of Dersa,Samha and Abdel Kouri and a number of pinnacles hardly reaching the surface. Geology and flora of the island is rather African than Arabian. This island is very much in the state as 2000 years ago. But new times are ariving with Landcruisers and a few simple guesthouses- and a divescenter. The underwaterworld is little known, and almost undived- so far. Socotra has been for a long time a mystery. Mentioned by ancient Greek writers, outpost of the Assyrian Church, neglected by the world, occupied by the British and Soviets, wrongly blamed as pirate´s center,the island has become finally freely accessable to the world under the Republic of Yemen and has been appointed as world heritage. Travelling Socotra comes under „Nature and Reality Tourism“. Touristic Infrastructure on Socotra is basic. In the main village of Hadibo are a few simple hotels, apart from hadibo you find a numer of campsites all over the island. They provide a bit of shelter and simple food. Tourism on Socotra means camping. Due to the new asphalt-road to the west,east and south of the island it is possible to take excursions to all sides of the island and return evenings back to your Hadibo Hotel. This is surely the most comfortable option, since Hadibo is the only place to get reasonable food. You should be aware, you need always a car at your disposal, otherwise you cannot move.
